Learning Objectives

with CBMT Board Certification Domains

  • Participants will demonstrate an understanding of Supportive (Resource-oriented) Music Therapy and how it is applied within the Continuum Model of GIM. (CBMT Domains II.D.1, 9; III.A.1)

  • Participants will discuss how to combine the basic principles of the Continuum Model of GIM with the music therapy techniques they currently apply in their clinical practice. (CBMT Domains III.A.5.ff, hh)

Course Schedule

Total of 250 minutes. This is an asynchronous, online course. You can complete the course modules at your own pace and on your own schedule. Follow the instructions to complete the course evaluation and receive your CMTE certificate.

  • 60 minutes - Experiential introduction

  • 60 minutes - Development of GIM and the Continuum Model methods (MI and GIM)

  • 60 minutes - Levels of psychotherapy practice (supportive, re- educative, reconstructive): goals, function of music, clinical examples

  • 60 minutes - Supportive level experiential music exercises

  • 10 minutes - Q/A

Lisa Summer, PhD, LMHC, MT-BC, is the director of the Guided Imagery & Music Training at the Institute for Music & Consciousness in Worcester, MA. She is the former director of the Anna Maria College Music Therapy Program.
