About the Course

The Ethics Board members will provide background on the types of ethics and delve into specifics of aspirational ethics and the implications in music therapy clinical practice. The topic of phronesis, or practical wisdom, will be introduced and how the changing health-care system integrates this concept into ethical decision-making when combined with evidence-based practice. Topics related to the development of virtue ethics, including phronesis, will be discussed, along with information on moral distress and the cultivation of moral resilience and how this relates to the situations that affect music therapists. Presenters will discuss how personal values and moral perception allow therapists to have a wide view of patient and family needs, treatment team professional needs, and how those perceptions can affect the daily interactions with each. The course will discuss how the AMTA Code of Ethics provides information on what it means to be a music therapist and guides the development of practical wisdom and decision making, and charges each one with maintaining professional competence, practicing self-awareness, and evaluating one's own practice and behavior. Participants will practice applying the code of ethics to situations frequently encountered by music therapists by using relevant frameworks including the Realm-Individual Process-Situation (RIPS) Model and Dileo's Ethical Decision-making Model.
